No matter how impressive a specific collector car is, there's no such thing as a perfect investment. The very nature of acquiring gains via equity is inherently risky depending on the factors and history affecting an asset. With that in mind, the idea is to find a classic which minimizes risk as much as possible. From an investment mindset, low risk is the major selling point of this 1 of 1 1964. 5 mustang. The fact that the car was 1 of 3 convertibles sent to holman moody for major modifications and subsequent pace car duty is beside the point. Just because the car was the only ford mustang to pace the 1964 indianapolis 500 and, in the process, became the most modeled ford in history doesn't mean all risk is moot. And, just because the car is a fanatically documented piece of automobilia that was driven by ford motor company heir benson ford doesn't make it a risk-less investment. In 1964, lee iacocca was preparing a massive marketing blitz for ford's newly revealed pony car. Since the company's falcon compact had already secured pace car duties for the 1964 indy 500, iacocca made his newest muse a last minute substitution. And, as soon as those cars rolled off the dearborn assembly line, they were shipped to legendary charlotte tuner holman moody. So, the first thing holman moody did was, with ford's blessing, replace the cars' stock 260 powerplants with detuned 289s that were being developed for the gt40 le mans racer. Next came a lowered and stiffened suspension. And finally, chrome marine handles were, along with custom flag stanchions, added for both form and function. Unfortunately, iacocca's grand but hasty plan encountered one major problem: holman moody only had time to complete two of the cars. When this mustang and its counterpart were shipped to indy, mustang number three, being essentially a prototype, was scrapped. And when the two completed cars arrived at the brickyard, one immediately experienced mechanical failure. After a big day of speed and photo ops, the drop-top was unceremoniously returned to ford. Ford, ever the supporter of motorsports, passed it to florida's sebring international raceway. Sebring made good use of the mustang as a parade car and driver loaner for a solid 11 seasons. Then, in 1974, this significant piece of dearborn history was locked in a raceway storage facility and all but forgotten. Fast forward to the early 90s when a mustang club of america official learned that a true gem of mustang history had been stored roughly 120 miles from his house for almost 20 years. After talks with the owner of the track, he became the first, and only, private owner of the car. And, circa 1991, he began a fully documented, nos restoration that would eventually earn the convertible a perfect score in mca's exclusive thoroughbred class. As far as labor was concerned, the restoration wasn't too difficult, as the car was incredibly solid when purchased. In fact, 95% of its parts, some of them one-of-a-kind originals, were reconditioned and bolted right back up using original and nos hardware. And the 5% that couldn't be reused was carefully replaced with either nos or completely custom components. In the final phase of the project, the car's all-original body and frame were walnut-blasted to remove long-dead pigment. And correct, single-stage ford fleet white was laid under a metallic blue stripe, indy tags and authentic pace car decals. It should be pretty obvious by now that this classic is all about sweating the details. And, sporting a look that's 100% true to how it rolled around the brickyard, the car presents a finished, high quality appearance which goes far beyond nice paint. At the front its solid body, a bulls eye grille hangs a rechromed horse emblem between nos headlights, rechromed parking lamps and an original, rechromed bumper. At the top of that grille, original '63 and '64-coded glass rides between original wipers, rechromed trim and a never-folded, nos canvas roof. At the sides of that glass, traditionally sculpted sheetmetal lays the groundwork for stainless cove trim, patriotic mustang emblems and old school door handles. And at the back of that sheetmetal, peaked fenders and a second rechromed bumper frame rechromed tail lights, a highly detailed fuel filler and custom-reproduced stanchions. Engine developed for the gt40 campaign, labeled "experimental" and, as far as anyone knows, the only factory-installed mustang mill of its kind, this convertible's 450 horsepower v8 is a literal fairy-tale of ford performance. At the top of the balanced, blueprinted and fully de-burred block, a gold, correctly decaled air cleaner feeds wind in to a correct autolite 4-barrel that's clamped onto fresh steel fluid lines. At the base of that carburetor, a cast iron ford intake rides between ported and polished hi-po heads, which are capped with bright gold valve covers. Below those heads, forged pistons and a drop forged crank combine with solid lifters and a c3 cam to create stout 10. 5 to 1 compression. At the front of that cam, a reliable points distributor sequences fire through nos, date-correct plug wires, which snake around correct fairlane exhaust manifolds. And at the leading edge of those manifolds, nos v-belts spin correct ancillaries behind a correct galaxie radiator. Aesthetically, the jet black small block sits in a completely restored engine bay which features factory decals and smooth, satin black paint. And nice pieces like nos plugs, an actual 'tar top' battery and tri-angulated, holman moody-installed bracing provide unmatched authenticity. The pros at holman moody seemed to think so, as long as they made a few small mods. Behind the hot 289, an "experimental" toploader 4-speed, which wears a familiar c3 bellhousing, turns a narrowed '59 galaxie limited-slip around 3. 25 gears. At the ends of the car, a fully restored suspension employs a larger sway bar, shortened coils, de-arched leafs and original, mismatched koni shocks. At the corners of the car, heavy duty, holman moody-tweaked drums provide firm, fade-free stops. Stomp the 'go pedal' and the aforementioned manifolds hurl spent gases in to an nos, resonator-free exhaust system that screams through a date-coded cross-flow muffler. Power meets the pavement thanks to painted steel wheels, which spin nos 7. 75-14 fires...

Car enthusiasts are an interesting lot. Not only do most of us possess the desire to preserve and create, we're also quite picky. Rather, in most cases, they're the well-plotted means to recreate the idealized version of that world. Perhaps nowhere is that more evident that with 'libby', this beloved '36 ford. The car's builder grew up watching fast, 1930s-era fords flash across his tv screen, and, even though he earned his hot rodding chops on muscle cars and corvettes, the thought of a keen '30s ford never left his psyche. So, after years of funding his car addiction with a successful career as an oral surgeon, he decided to build the quintessential street rod. No, this wasn't about simply preserving memories, it was about a detail-oriented dream to create a timeless steel roadster. So, he searched for almost two years before locating a rust-free member of the 3,862 1936 roadsters ford produced - then traveled all the way to canada to pick it up. The first order of business with any hot rod is power, and few engines make power like the mighty hemi! Enamored with the legend of the early elephant motor, this roadster's builder decided to make it the powertrain of choice for his idealized cruiser. That's when the pros at lititz, pennsylvania's black mountain hemi tagged in. They located a 1956 block, capped it with 1954 heads and shipped it to hudson, new hampshire where a full rebuild by golen engines included a . 030 overbore, a schneider racing cam and egge 9. 5 to 1 pistons. At the top of the mill, a body-matched batwing air cleaner floats a billet tie over a 670cfm holley street avenger carburetor. That carb, strung between polished fuel lines and a quality lokar linkage, dumps wind and liquid in to a polished hot heads intake. At the back of that intake, a vertex electronic distributor sequences spark through pliable taylor spiro pro plug wires. Under those wires, custom tri-y headers make quick work of spent gases. In front of those pipes, polished pulleys spin a polished water pump beside modern power steering and a polished generator. In front of those ancillaries, a big radiator feeds polished water tubes under an orange-tinged billet cap. And items like a polished oil filler, polished valve covers, polished dipsticks and custom hood supports reinforce the build's clean and concise aesthetics. Intense operation picking an ideal engine is easy. Well, that posed a whole new challenge. One that would see the ford undergo serious surgery and major modification. After being shipped to xtreme restoration in slatersville, rhode island, the car's factory frame was boxed, smoothed and carefully modified to accommodate the hemi. Naturally, the floor was cut and carefully refashioned around a proven chrysler a727 torqueflite that spins a polished driveshaft. That tube twists a proven currie 9-inch that's finished with a posi-traction differential and 31-spline axles. At the front of the car, factory bones were swapped for a full kugel komponents phase ii independent suspension, which features billet qa-1 coil-over-shocks. At the back of the car, a custom 4-link set-up hangs a second set of billet qa-1s under a '70 ford torino sway bar. The hemi's power is kept in check by 10-inch wilwood discs and power-assisted ssbc calipers. Exhaust exits through custom, powder-coated pipes, which, balanced on custom connecting rod hangers, center polished, glasspack-style mufflers in front of polished stainless tips. And everything rolls on metallic wheel vintiques gennies, which spin wide toyo whitewalls around stainless trim rings and custom center caps. All that first class hardware is framed in solid, gloss black floors. And choice finishing components include: stainless fluid lines, a polished starter, a polished brake booster, a 20-gallon rock valley fuel tank and quality wilwood brake proportioning. And since this particular surgeon had already participated in the detroit autorama in years past, a lack of inspiration was not an issue. He had a vision, and he made sure to see that vision through even if it meant doing things more than once. For starters, the car's professionally finessed body is coated in custom ppg orange metallic 2-stage that was mixed and sprayed twice. At the front of that pigment, a polished bullnose, which took three different mock-ups, shades a dressed grille that's framed by pinstriped headlights and a polished bumper. Behind that grille, a custom clamshell hood aligns vented side panels that have been discretely tailored to the big hemi engine. Below those panels, polished speaker grilles lead bold fenders that are fashioned around smoothed running boards. At the back of those boards, a second polished bumper frames a polished fuel filler and blue dot taillights. And the top of the car, well, that's where the bulk of the modification happened. See, the builder wanted to lower the center bow of the roof by roughly three inches, and it took several iterations of the custom cloth top to accomplish that. In front of that top, a tinted windshield sprouts custom mirrors from a polished frame. Supplied by garrett leather, the car's cushy glide bench and fun rumble seat mix first-rate comfort with first-rate style. Those thrones surf cinnamon german weave carpet, which floats piped and color-keyed mats under a polished e-brake, billet foot pedals, a polished fire extinguisher and a long lokar shifter. In front of that shifter, a custom bird's eye maple dash hangs united speedometer telemetry next to a locking glovebox and modern pioneer audio. Custom leather side panels flow to a custom leather convertible cowl. Behind the scenes, modern wiring complements quality dynamat insulation. And the driver commands a custom banjo steering wheel, which spins a bird's eye maple rim between an orange-tinged, "v8" branded hub and an old school knee knocker tach. Here's a short list of the car's major accolades.

And the most recent addition, this killer mustang, might be the nicest one yet. It's easy to see why with sinister charcoal highlighting a supercharged 302/5-speed drivetrain, a thoroughly modernized chassis and supple red leather. And, in fact, the amount of detail that went in to this ford's construction is simply remarkable, as there's virtually no piece that hasn't been smoothed, polished, massaged or upgraded in some way. Bodywork & trim the beneficiary of a professional restoration that was completed by the staff of timeless kustoms of camarillo, california, this slick pony features a seamless layer of charcoal base that's highlighted by a satin hood stripe and sealed in glossy clear. Take one look down the sides of the car's laser-straight body and it becomes very obvious that great care was taken to ensure every panel is aligned to better-than-factory standards. Step closer to that body's mirror-like pigment and check out its straight and ripple-free surfaces, which are a product of both clean oem sheetmetal and high quality replacement panels. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience the kind of excellent fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Back in the day, ford designers made sure every year of the first generation mustang had plenty of visual sizzle. And in the 21st century, it doesn't get much better than this drop-top's masterful combination of aggressive accents and well-placed trim. At the front of the car, a monochromatic mesh grille centers hella driving lamps between modern headlights, a shelby-style valance and an aggressive chin spoiler. Behind that grille, a shaved hood anchors a small scoop in front of polished windshield wipers, tinted greenhouse glass and color-keyed, stainless frames. At the sides of that glass, small hot rod mirrors reflect a fully shaved profile. Of stump-pulling torque! Cast from diesel-grade iron, and designed with added material in key areas, ford performance boss blocks are far stronger than any ford oe block ever produced. At the top of the jet black mill, monochromatic pipes shuttle wind from a remote, fender-mount air cleaner to a polished throttle body and sleek trick flow intake. That intake coordinates with electronic fuel injection to feed edelbrock victor jr. When that air/fuel mixture floods the cylinders, a proven motorcraft distributor sequences fire through sleeved prestolite plug wires. As that fire turns into compression, resultant gases are jettisoned through ceramic-coated, long-tube headers. That compression's cooling is provided by a big radiator, which stores water in front of two perma-cool puller fans. There's a modern serpentine system that spins a painted alternator opposite a painted ac compressor. And overall, the car's braced and polished engine compartment is exceptionally well done, featuring first rate ancillaries like a k&n breather, an aeromotive fuel regulator, an auto gage pressure gauge and clean trick flow valve covers. Drivetrain & suspension at the bottom of this mustang, a freshened undercarriage houses solid, undercoated floors that are bolted to a roster of top-notch components. Behind the snarling 302, a tremec 3550 5-speed twists a powder-coated ford axle. That drivetrain rolls on a total control products 4-bar that's fitted with a 5/8-inch sway bar and adjustable varishock coil-overs. Opposite that 4-bar, a total control products front-half employs a 1-inch sway bar and two more varishock coil-overs. That hardware is augmented with flaming river power rack-and-pinion steering. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to 3-inch, ceramic-coated pipes that employ an h-shaped crossover in front of throaty pypes street pro mufflers. And everything, from the car's deep-sump oil pan to its welded subframe connectors and quality aeromotive fuel system, appears clean, sorted and ready to pound the pavement. The heavily bolstered seats, a familiar bench and mid-century, caf-style buckets, are framed by a custom low-profile roll cage and 4-point sparco harnesses. In front of those perches, an attractive, 2-tone dash hangs racy auto meter telemetry to the left of a pioneer cd player and vintage air climate control. At the sides of that dash, custom door panels mimic the style of original factory fodder. Below those panels, muted sills stretch premium carpet under metal foot pedals, style-matched mats and a traditional hurst shifter. In front of the driver, a simple sparco steering wheel spins a thick suede rim around a tilting column. And behind the accumat-wrapped cockpit, the car's fully finished trunk stores a big memphis audio subwoofer and dual memphis audio amps. It combines professional grade performance hardware with one of the coolest bodies in the hobby to create a take-no-prisoners pony car. Climate Control✔ CD Player✔ Air Conditioning
